Well, President Obama is giving his first official Congressional address tonight. We’ll have some reactions– feel free to share your thoughts as well.
9 PM. Captain Sully is in the house! Let’s put him in charge of solving the financial crisis.
We’re watching the FOX News coverage… you’ll be glad to know that Michelle Obama “looks radiant… in sort of a dark purple.”
9:12. President Obama is “slowly making his way down the aisle.” <<Understatement of the year so far.
9:18. The speech has begun… apparently the economy is struggling. We hadn’t heard.
9:22. “For too long, short term profits have been prioritized over long-term stability.” Amen.
9:24. There’s the first awkward partisan applause breakdown!
9:26. We’re going to slow down and try to pay attention. By the way, if you want to play a fun political drinking game, take a shot of something every time Obama says “confidence”. Or any other buzzword. But that’s not what we’re doing.
9:35. Call us naive, but we think Obama could get the job done. The problem isn’t Obama, and it’s not the Congressional GOP. The biggest threat to Obama’s recovery plan is sitting right behind him… that’s right, Mrs. Nancy Pelosi. Obama talks about staving off foreclosures, Pelosi sees the opportunity to subsidize condoms.
9:40. “The ravages of climate change.” We wouldn’t go that far.
9:47. We don’t care what the pundits say. Obama is a good speaker, but this speech is simply an outline of his plan. There’s no way to evaluate it right now. If the economy responds positively, Obama goes down in history as a great president. If not, he’s done in 2012 and will be remembered as Jimmy Carter II… setting the stage for Ronald Reagan II. (Ron Paul?) Chris Matthews doesn’t know what will happen. Sean Hannity doesn’t know what will happen. We’re gonna have to wait and see.
10:15. Well, we know Obama can give a good speech. He can inspire people to get out and vote for him… but can he inspire a rally in the stock market? Can Americans respond to President Obama’s call for hard work and responsibility? Only time will tell. That’s the context this speech should be evaluated in. The upcoming analysis from the talking heads will tell you nothing.
10:20. Do we really need to see Bobby Jindal respond? We KNOW Republicans think the stimulus is irresponsible (but a trillion for the war in Iraq wasn’t.) But it’s already done, and we need consumer confidence right now! The stimulus has a much better chance of working if the public believes it is going to work.
